Project seeks automated state-of-healthLIVERMORE, Calif. An early-warning signal of transformer trouble is being researched at Sandia National Laboratories in a project funded by EPRI, the collaborative science and technology development organization for the power industry.
Electricity follows a complex path from its generation at power plants to its use in our homes. Along the way it undergoes changes in voltage, stepping up to the thousands of volts needed for efficient transmission and finally stepping down to the typical 110 volts at house wall outlets. An important component in this network is power transformers, which change the voltage at points along the grid. The tool under development at Sandia should help keep power transformers reliable.
